It looks like Eve is making references to her female rap peers with irony and disgust, as she thinks they spoiled the beauty and the real face of hip hop by blending it with pop. On “Never Gone”, she spits about her personal legacy, while Chrisette Michele blends in with her great vocals. Besides, on “Make It Out This Town”, Eve makes it obvious that she is stabbing pop industry and those who top the charts without deserving it. The beats are also remarkable and Eve sounds better than ever, even better than before taking a recording hiatus. Singles such as “She Bad Bad”, featuring guests Pusha T and Juicy J, as well as the self-affirming “EVE”, with reggae’s Miss Kitty, sound a bit more like the Eve of the old days, but they are just the exception that confirms the rule.

Thus, Eve is officially back and Lip Lock is the weapon that will put her back on the lost throne. When Demi Lovato released Unbroken in 2011, millions of boys and girls went crazy for this Disney actress-turned-singer. Well, this month, her army of fans or, as we call them today, Lovatics, have another reason to lose their minds. Demi is set to hit the American stores on May 14 and the British stores on May 20.

The album kicks off with “Heart Attack“, the lead single that says everything about the album and its singer. Filled with the ‘wow’ factor, the song is definitely the best she has ever released so far and definitely one of the best tracks of the decade. It’s obvious that Lovato has entered a stage where she has to prove that she has changed, that she has grown up and evolved into a complex, mature act that still has plenty of worthwhile things to say. Besides, for her, the stakes are high because she is doing a good job as a judge on The X Factor show and Demi’s success will reflect on it too.

On “Made In The USA” Lovato allows her fully bloomed personality to carry the song. It’s an incredible pop production that bears many similarities with Miley Cyrus’ “Party in the USA,” except that Lovato’s version is definitely more wistful and mature. It could very well be a follow-up single, the perfect choice for the summer months to come, particularly thanks to its guitar lick, banjo-y feel, blazing chorus and unusual romantic statements, such as “Our love runs deep like a Chevy”.

“Without The Love” sounds pretty remarkable, cool and sad at the same time, as Lovato sings deep from her big lungs: “What good is a love song… without the love?” “Neon Lights” comes next, contumaciously positive and totally different than the previous tracks. For this song, Lovato seems to have found inspiration in David Guetta’s music, as she’s very generous on using blinking synthesizers and clomping bass. It’s an electro-pop song, quite radio and club-friendly, but it’s not exactly the highlight of this album.

“Two Pieces” preps the soil for everybody’s favorite, “Nightingale”, a perfectly performed ballad. It’s a rousing song, destined to become legendary thanks to the unexpected chorus of gospel backup vocalists in the final passage. In addition, “In Case” hits our ears with an affected performance, waking up memories we buried deep and trigging a tearful response from our eyes. The lyrics are to blame, those painful words about faded photos in a pant pocket, a piece of clothing salvaged for reminding us of someone, etc.

However, enough with the mid-tempo moments, it’s time to kick some ass, because Lovato’s “Really Don’t Care” with Cher Lloyd is energetic and restores the happy mood just in time for “Fire Starter”, a slick pop-rock song that will make you want to be the “badass jumping off a moving train”.

Then, Lovato goes back to feelings. “Something That We’re Not”, “Never Been Hurt” and “Shouldn’t Come Back” are all the outcome of putting her heart on the front line. She sings about love, about heartbreak and refusal, with an outstanding newfound vocal maturity that proves to the world that Demi Lovato has some form of longevity. The album ends with the “story that I have never told”. “Warrior” tells the story of her personal struggles and triumph, comparing Lovato with the phoenix bird, which has risen from the public ashes.

After a five-year hiatus, Fall Out Boy released their much awaited fifth album, Save Rock and Roll. The album raised controversies amongst critics and fans, as it’s an album that doesn’t fit all expectations. And that’s because the record feels like a bubble burst, like an unconventional return to the band’s abandoned genre.

If you were expecting a new Folie à Deux or Infinity on High, you’d discover that Save Rock and Roll has nothing to do with its predecessors. It’s an album that sounds fresh, spotlighting the group’s outstanding talent of filling arenas, as well as Pete Wentz’s ambition to create airbrushed, new material that excels every previous creation.

The album kicks off with an orchestral string section on “The Phoenix,” highlighting once again, that Fall Out Boy is like a chameleon, changing its sound with every year that goes by and with every new record release. The orchestral sampling, which is unquestionably, one of the band’s main staples, reveals Wentz preference for pop-punk, as well as the fact that the group has transitioned to alternative pop rock on this new album. This opening track sets the tone for the rest of the album, but it doesn’t prep the listener for the celeb interventions that pop out along the tracks. Elton John, for instance, is one of the surprise guests on this record. His incredible voice appears on the title track “Save Rock and Roll” that closes the band’s comeback album. Before a nice violin refrain sets the mood, John and Stump’s soulful vocals shine while singing lyrics like “Defend the faith/Going down swinging” and so on.

However, Elton John is not the only important guest. Big Sean, British synth-pop starlet Foxes, 2 Chainz and even the controversial Courtney Love all bring their first-class attributes to make the album something more than just a fun piece of pop rock. Big Sean appears on “The Mighty Fall” with “Turn up … fall out” intro and the line “Hell yeah I’m a dick, girl … addicted to you,” turning the song into a party rock anthem. Courtney Love introduces herself from the first seconds of the song “Rat A Tat”, “…It’s Courtney, bitch,” suggesting that she’s the girl from the song, “the young dirty blonde” and “his suicide blond”, while Foxes has a gorgeous mid-tempo duet with Stump on “Just One Yesterday”, a track that recalls Adele’s “Rolling In The Deep” more than it should.

But, despite the features, these songs do not deserve to be placed under the spotlight. An essential track is, for example, “My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark”. Stump’s vocals sound better than ever on this single and the chorus is so infectious, that you’ll involuntarily sing along to it upon first listen. “Alone Together” is also a key song, being filled with back-to-back rousing moments and one of the album’s best lyrics: “My heart is like a stallion/they love it more when it’s broken.”

Therefore, Save Rock and Roll marks Fall Out Boy’s return to mainstream, and as any comeback, it stirs criticism and discontent. However, before judging the record too harsh, we should all give it some credit. Perhaps it’s not so bad after all that the group decided to venture on the unexpected territory of rave-pop and to bring along numerous celebrity cameos. It’s not experimental, it’s not highly instrumental and it’s definitely not bold, but it’s an album worthy of our appreciation.
